Refueling on BBV-9 by Deepblu742 Refueling on BBV-9 by Deepblu742
Another 70's sci-fi inspired piece.

A brief stop among the basalt temples scattered around the barren flatland. The sparse topography makes an ideal spaceport for non-VTOL ships that require a large landing area.

Tidbits: The vehicles are rovers seen in 2009's MOON movie. The spaceliner/freighter is actually a heavily tweaked XB-70 Valkyrie, a prototype bomber of the US Air Force during the pre-ICBM cold war years. It's landing gears are from a B-1 bomber, elongated of course.

Hey! It is definetely Sukhoi's T-4/"Object 100", the supersonic rocket carrier! (With different colours, of course). The only different thing is, this machine doesn't have the adaptive cabin, am I right?
Good job done there, I must say.

спасибо Nikita. I based this design off a photo of the XB-70 North American Valkyrie which never had an adaptive cabin, of which Sukhoi T-4 seems to have been the Russian counterpart?

:iconnikitakartinginboxru:
Not exact counterpart, I must say. What was the same - chassis, speed, altitude and materials. Difference - a bit of aerodynamics, and a bit different purposes. XB-70 was built to go above the enemy's countermeasures, but this project didn't go well, thanks to MiG-25. What about the T-4, it was built to destroy enemy's ships, but it didn't go well too, thanks to Tu-160 and its price. But these both are a great pieces of engineering, I must say. And yeah, you're welcome!

Well thanks for the information, I never found much on the T-4 other than basic program history and why it was scrapped.

The building in the background looks almost identical to the Keyship from Halo 2 - Halo 3.

I've heard that before, I used what I thought were photos from various monuments/architecture from the Middle East (constructivist style from the 70s-80s). But who knows, perhaps those may have been just photomanip'd from somewhere else like Bungie studios? Using found stuff off the web can be the gray-est area...O_o

It's like an exact replica, hehe. It looks like the Keyship and the Quarantine Zone put together. Nice work, anyways. :) Brings memories to mind.

XB-70 is probably my favorite plane next to the F-14, Falcon, Phantom and Eagle.

Very cool :)

Thank you sir, seems the XB is a popular but under-featured design in the history of aerospace, prob because it was just a few prototypes. Finding any decent photo refs of this plane was daunting. Love to offer a decent print of this but I can't find a large resolution of this plane so this screen size will have to do.

Really cool picture! Reminds me of the old Asimov book artwork by Chris Foss. Like the idea of using already existing aircraft and components as models - gives a more real base

What are those buildings in the background? Are they manipulations of something, or did you create them from scratch? They remind me of the I/O Tower in Tron.

Overall this is a very interesting composition. Like others have said, it looks like sci-fi illustrations from the Seventies and Eighties. I honestly thought it was by Peter Elson when I saw it on somebody's blog. It's also looks pretty realistic, although to me it feels like there's something off about the perspective and shadows. Anyway, nice work.

Those are just manip'd pieces of monuments somewhere in the Middle East. Thanks for the compliment, Elson has always been an inspiration. Well, the shadows were eyeballed for the people etc., the ship's shadow was directly used from a photo reference, strange as it looks. Certain things may not be perfect, being my background is graphic design, not illustration. ;)
