Inspired by the story of Stanley W. "Swede" Vejtasa, WW2 American Navy pilot of an SBD Dauntless dive bomber that was on a patrol during the Battle of the Coral Sea. His flight was jumped by 12 Japanese Zeros & in the ensuing fight many of his squadron mates where shot down.
Realizing his plane was a 100mph slower than the heavily armed Zeros and his rear-gunner being outclassed with his twin 30 caliber guns versus the Zeros' dual 7.7mm & 20mm canon, he countered the Japanese pilots "racetrack" runs on him by pulling tighter heavy G turns than the Zeros could to constantly face his attackers head-on so he could bring his own twin front mounted 50 cals to bear. He managed to down three Zeros, even surviving a head-on kamikaze attempt which damaged his wing!
Evidently the "Swede" was recognized for this incredible feat by being transferred to a Wildcat fighter squadron and went on to shoot down 7 more enemy aircraft attempting attacks run on the U.S.S. Enterprise, quite possibly saving this famous carrier from oblivion. He earned 3 Navy Crosses during the war, the only one to earn them for both dive bombing and aerial combat.
